In four days, twelve months before Luxor, the Moon's shadow crosses Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain. Greatest duration: 2m 18.2s over the Atlantic (NASA GSFC); on land you get up to about 1m 48s in Asturias. It is mainland Europe's first totality since 1999 — and the dress rehearsal for the 2027 trip.

Computed from NASA's published Besselian elements with the same code that produces our 2027 figures, validated against independent tables to ±2s (method). Totality is short and the Sun is low — being minutes late or facing the wrong horizon costs the whole event.

Akureyri and northeast Iceland are outside the path — partial only. Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon: partial only. Partial phases are never safe without ISO-certified filters — that includes the minutes before and after totality everywhere on this list.
The sky odds, honestly
- Iceland: August sunshine reaches the ground about 32% of daylight hours (satellite cloudiness ≈71%). The three western peninsulas — Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, Reykjanes — are roughly equal on paper; the play is mobility, watching the Iceland Met Office cloud forecast and driving to the gap on the day.
- Spain's north coast (Galicia–Asturias–Cantabria–Basque): cloud averages close to 60%; over the last 21 Augusts the eclipse would have been cleanly visible on roughly 10 of them. Higher sun (8–12°) than inland, worse odds.
- Ebro valley (Zaragoza): the region's best odds — cloud climatology under 30%, an easy view in ~18 of 21 historical years — bought with a very low Sun (≈6°). You need a genuinely open west-northwest horizon: a ridge line, a rooftop, the valley's western rim.
- Balearics (Palma): ≈75% odds of success and a 2.4° Sun — totality over the sea horizon. From the right west-facing coast it will be the most photogenic version of this eclipse; from the wrong one you see a hill.

Where to stand
- Rule one, everywhere in Spain: the Sun sits low in the west-northwest at totality. Scout a sightline with nothing — no ridge, no building, no haze bank — between you and that horizon, from the actual spot, the evening before at the same hour.
- Asturias coast: longest land totality (~1m 48s) and the highest Spanish sun (~10°). West-facing beaches and headlands west of Gijón give sea-horizon geometry with escape routes inland if the marine layer builds.
- Ebro valley: best clouds, lowest sun. High points on the valley's eastern side looking west-northwest — not the valley floor.
- Iceland: stay mobile on the western peninsulas; the totality band is wide there and the road network lets you reposition in the final hours.
Why it matters for 2027

Veterans say the second eclipse is the one you truly see — make 2026 your first.
