The countdown, as a to-do list
2 August 2027
Eclipse day approaches
-
Now — late 2026
Pick your country using the cloud data; join waitlists for small-capacity stays (Kerkennah, Siwa). Luxor eclipse-window blocks are already being marketed — if Egypt is the plan, price it now.
-
12 Aug 2026
The Iceland/Spain rehearsal. Watch how fast its capacity vanished — the same curve hits 2027 harder.
-
Sep–Dec 2026
Book accommodation for Aug 2027. This is the sweet spot: schedules exist, panic has not started.
-
Jan–Mar 2027
Long-haul flights into hubs (Seville/Málaga, Cairo, Jeddah). Buy ISO 12312-2 glasses from vetted suppliers — counterfeits flood the market late.
-
Apr–Jun 2027
Ground logistics: ferries (Kerkennah), desert transfers (Siwa), day-of mobility plan for strait sites.
-
Jul 2027
Heat plan for Egypt/Saudi options: shade, water, timing. Test every filter on the actual Sun.
-
2 Aug 2027
Filters on for the partials. Filters off only in totality. Watch it — the first one is not for the camera.
When to book a room — the mechanics
Hotels along a path of totality do two things: they sell out, and they reprice. Being early beats being clever, and the mechanics are boring and predictable:
- Chain booking calendars open about a year out. That means August 2027 dates at major brands went live around mid-2026 — they are open now. Independents and small properties open later and less predictably; for those, email directly and ask.
- Book cancellable, early. A refundable rate booked now is a free option on the best inventory; you can re-shop it later. The non-refundable discount is rarely worth surrendering eclipse-week flexibility for.
- Small capacity fails first, and completely. Tarifa, Kerkennah, Siwa, Melilla and Gibraltar measure rooms in hundreds, not tens of thousands. Cádiz, Tangier, Luxor and Jeddah have real depth — pressure shows up there as price, not absence.
- A base within striking distance beats a perfect address. Totality does not care whether you slept in Tarifa or 40 minutes away in Algeciras — every Spanish location is reachable from a broad radius if you leave early on the day. Pay the premium only for walk-out-the-door convenience, not necessity.
Room-stock and booking-window statements above are general market mechanics plus what each location page documents; this site holds no inventory data and names no specific hotel's availability. Where-to-stay notes: on every location page.
Capacity risk concentrates in three places: island stays, oasis stays, and Luxor's eclipse window. Everything else forgives procrastination better. Choose the location first — the timeline is easy once the destination is fixed.
