Southern Spain: exactly where to stand
On the morning of 2 August 2027 the umbra comes ashore on the Costa de la Luz. Totality runs 10:45–10:50 local (CEST) with the Sun 37–39° up, almost due east (azimuth ≈95°) — computed, like every figure on this page, from NASA's Besselian elements (method).
The one number that moves: seconds per kilometre
The path's northern limit passes just north of Cádiz; the centreline lies out in the strait. That single fact organises the whole coast — and the gain is steepest at the start: the first ~30 km from Cádiz to Conil buy a full extra minute (2m 54s → 4m 01s), while the next 40 km to Tarifa add 38 more seconds. Position is the cheapest upgrade in eclipse travel: no flight, no booking, just an earlier alarm.

The terrain myth — and the one place it's real
You may read that the Sun will be "low" for this eclipse in Spain. It won't be: 37–39° is a comfortable mid-morning Sun — for reference, that's higher than the midday winter Sun in London. On an open beach or hilltop, no terrain in Andalusia can block it. (The genuinely low-sun Spanish eclipse is 12 August 2026, at 2–12°.)
The one real obstruction is the Rock of Gibraltar itself. The ridge rises 426 m immediately east of the town, and a 38° sun is blocked anywhere within about 550 m west of the crest — which includes much of Main Street and the marina. On the Rock, position on the east or south side: Eastern Beach, Catalan Bay, Europa Point, or the Upper Rock with a clear eastern sightline. Or simply watch from La Línea's east-facing beach across the border. Simple trigonometry, but it will catch people on the day.
The Levante rule
The strait's easterly — the Levante — is the local wildcard. Anderson's analysis: it "tends to be the more persistent, sometimes blowing steadily for days and even weeks, particularly in the summer months," and at 15–40 km/h it flies "a streaming flag of cloudiness" from the Rock's upper slopes (stationary, on the north side by the airport — avoidable by position). It is also why the strait beaches around Tarifa average a 74% sun-visible frequency in August against 88% in Cádiz.
So make it a rule, not a vibe: check the wind forecast 48h out. Poniente (westerly) or calm — the Tarifa strip and its 4m 30s+ are the play. Levante blowing — trade seconds for sky: Cádiz's Atlantic side, or the Alboran coast (Estepona 3m 38s, Marbella 3m 18s), where Anderson notes Atlantic marine cloud "usually doesn't penetrate into the Strait of Gibraltar past Tarifa," so sites east of it "fare particularly well."
Dust, haze, and August air
The region-wide threat isn't cumulus — it's Saharan dust: "a dusty pall over the whole of the sky from dust blown northward from desert basins in Mali and Mauritania" (Anderson). Average aerosol depth runs ≈0.12 at the Spanish limit against 0.20–0.30 in Morocco — one of the quiet arguments for the Spanish side. A calima won't hide the eclipse, but it dims the corona and muddies photography; if one is forecast, elevation helps (Vejer, the Upper Rock).
Getting in and out — the honest version
- The funnel is the A-48/N-340 corridor from Cádiz toward Tarifa and the A-7/AP-7 on the Alboran side. It's a Monday mid-morning in peak beach season plus an eclipse: treat 08:00 as late. Be parked where you'll watch before 08:30 local; totality starts ~10:45 and the roads will not forgive a last-minute reposition.
- Parking at the small beaches (Bolonia, Valdevaqueros, Zahara) fills on ordinary August days — on eclipse morning, assume it's gone by early morning and be walking-distance early, or stage from Tarifa/Barbate on foot and bike.
- You don't need the beach. The Sun is 38° up in the east: any open field, mirador or rooftop inside the band works. Inland positions off the N-340 dodge the coastal crowd entirely.
- Heat is real but civilised by 2027-path standards: mid-morning Atlantic coast, not Luxor at noon. Water, hat, and shade for the hour of partial phases — filters on for every partial second.
Sleeping near the shadow
Tarifa is the smallest room stock on the coast and already runs hot in kitesurf season — it sells out first. Cádiz, and the Estepona–Marbella strip on the far side, have real depth; Algeciras and La Línea are the unglamorous, well-positioned bases 20 minutes from the strait beaches.
